2.1 Basic Concepts 2.2 Installing the WebMedley Toolbar
The site administrator controls all Web site functions. This may be one individual or a group of individuals. The administrator has authority to delete pages, create new pages, or edit any page on the site. The administrator may create e-mail accounts and configure additional features of your site. No one can change any part of your Web site unless the administrator has assigned them the permission to do so administrators can manage all users on the site. Someone who is authorized to make changes on your site is called a user.
Adding a new user - see 3.1.1
A user may have limited authorization: for example, to edit only a single page. We call this person a page editor. Another user may have very broad authorization: for example, to edit a group of pages and also to delete pages or create new ones. We call this person a page manager.
When we refer to the three levels of administrative access available in WebMedley, we're talking about (from lowest to highest) the page editor, page manager, and administrator.
An administrator assigns permissions to each user to determine their level of authority in the site.
For convenience, administrators create groups of users who all share the same permissions. This way, the administrator can assign the permissions all at one time to the group, then add the users to the group. *Note: All permissions are based upon groups, so every user must be part of a group.* Creating a group - see 3.1.2 Assigning permissions - see 3.1.3 Adding a user to a group - see 3.1.3
The management console gathers together all of the functions of the Web site. The management console is a secure location on the Web that may be accessed only by a password. Some management console functions are available only to administrators.
An authorized user who has logged on to the management console is ready to edit a page. Many of the editing functions are available on the WebMedley toolbar. The toolbar is similar to the formatting toolbar on your word processor, but it installs itself into your browser (Internet Explorer)
Installing the toolbar - see 2.2
You can edit a page in two different ways. You can change its design, in what we call the layout view; or you can change its content (words and pictures) in what we call the edit view. We separate these two functions so that you can quickly change the content of a page without having to adjust the design. The important thing to remember is that there are two separate areas to save your parts of your site - first, the layout view ("Save this Page" button), and second, the edit view (Disk "save" button on the toolbar).
Creating a page: overview - see 3.3.2 Editing a page: Overview - see 3.3.3
Other editing and design features are addressed in the outline of management console functions and toolbar functions.
When you edit a page, and even when you save your changes, you have not yet made a change on your live (visible) Web site. To send your new page to the Web, you must publish.
Publishing a page - see 3.3.4
