How to Use the WebMedley Message Board
[Go to the Message Board]

Message boards are wonderful tools for ongoing conversations and questions.  You can think of them as a 'delayed response' chat room where you will make a statement and then eventually others will respond to that statement and then you can respond to their responses and so on.  The advantages of a message board over a chat room are that those you are speaking with don't have to be logged on at the same time you are and you are able to review past conversations that have lead up to this point in the message thread.

This article will help illustrate how to successfully use a message board and make you familiar with common message board terminology:

  • Post:  A post is simply a message left on the board.  It can be a reply to another post or a stand-alone question or statement that can in turn be posted to.
  • Thread: A thread is a series of posts that are linked together by a common discussion topic.  So, for example, if I started a message about 'the price of tea in China' and someone responded to that message, their reply would be the second in the thread about the cost of tea in China.
  • "Flaming":  To 'flame' someone on a message board means to respond to their post in an inappropriately angry and/or rude manner.  Flamers (those who flame others) tend to add very little to discussions and will have their posts deleted.

How to reply to a post:

  1. In the post you wish to reply to - there will be a small 'reply' link in the upper right corner.  Click on this and you will be prompted for three fields of information:
      • Posted by: (Place your name in this field)
      • Email Address: (Your email address)
      • Message: This is where you would type your response to the post.
  2. Once you have done this, click the 'submit' button which will add your message to the current thread.  It will appear directly beneath the last posted message.
