Free Resources

Free is a good thing.  If you know where to look, the internet is full of great tools and resources all absolutely free.  However, not everybody has time to look for all these things, so on this page, we have done some of the research for you.  Below are some free resources found on the internet that you may find very helpful to you in creating and maintaining an wonderful web site.

WinZip (Download an Evaluative Version)
Winzip is a Microsoft product that allows files to be compressed and sent safely over email.  Computer viruses are often sent by email in the form of an .exe (or executable) file.  Unfortunately, every other program you use on your computer probably has an exe extension as well.  Winzip allows you to "zip" up your files and email an executable file with a .zip extension so that it can be transferred safely and in a compressed format.  Winzip is also necessary for opening .zip files - which are how many pieces of software are transmitted over the internet.

PDF995 (Download Latest Version)
PDF is a format that can be read by IBM compatible as well as Macintosh computers.  Also the reader is free!  What this means is you can put downloadable documents (like a newsletter) on your website, and if someone cannot read it, they can download the reader for free. The reader installs like a printer which means you can "print" any document into PDF format and then upload into webmedley.  For more detailed instructions on how to use .pdf's on your website, try our Newsletter Article.

Irfanview (Download Free Copy)
 Irfanview cannot do everything that something like Adobe Photoshop can do, but it does 3 very important things. 

• It can resize any format of picture or graphic to whatever size you specify.
• It can change the resolution of any picture or graphic (To 72 dpi).
• It can convert any format of graphic or picture to .jpg or .gif (HTML and Webmedley compatible formats).

This makes Irfanview a great companion to Webmedley.  Whenever you want a picture or graphic on your site, just open it in irfanview first to make it "webfriendly", then upload into a media library. 

Xenu Link Sleuth (Download Here)
Okay - thier site looks a little strange, but it's a great little tool they have avalible there.  Xenu Link Sleuth is some great software that will "spider" through any website you designate and give a detailed report on:

• Broken links, ordered by link 
• Broken links, ordered by page 
• List of redirected URLs 
• List of ftp and gopher URLs 
• List of valid URLs you can submit to a search engine 
• Site Map of HTML pages with a Title 
• Broken local links 
• Orphan files 
• Statistics for managers

This can be useful information for larger sites that want to make sure all the pictures have been uploaded correctly, and all links are good.
